ABOUT LAURENCE BASSE

Laurence Basse rose to fame as a finalist on the Emmy Award-winning show Project Runway Season 15 and Project Runway All-Star Season 20. She designed for many celebrities, including NBA superstars Dwight Howard and Serge Ibaka, Gina Rodriguez for the cover of Latina Magazine, Jada Pinkett Smith, actor Aldis Hodge, Grammy winner Samara Joy, and comedian/actor Yvonne Orji.

Before venturing into the design world, Laurence Basse had a successful modeling career, discovered by none other than Jean-Paul Gaultier back in the late nineties. She appeared in French and American publications like UNITED COLORS OF BENETTON, ELLE MAGAZINE, COSMOPOLITAN, and many more. During this time, Basse began to absorb the industry; modeling was a way to make money and go to fashion school.

Basse’s inspiration developed early from a modest upbringing in Normandie, France, where dressing was function before form. Basse emerged with a feverish passion for well-designed things. “I loved to dress up as a kid but never thought of becoming a designer until my brother and I started making clothes in high school. We sold our clothes to the more privileged kids, so it became a hustle! People were hustling drugs, I was hustling clothes,” said Basse.

Her broad appreciation for the arts covered everything from automobiles to architecture and nested in fashion after her first brush with Thierry Mugler. Basse draws inspiration from the clean lines and structural elements of buildings, which she incorporates into her designs as architecture for the body. The unique blend of art and architecture, the duality of genre, the hard and the soft, sets her apart in the fashion industry.

She professionally pursued her allure, enrolling in a fashion art school in Paris, France. One aspect of fashion that Basse particularly chose and loves working with is leather. “I didn’t start working with leather; my background is Paris Haute-Couture. However, since I have a rebellious nature, I needed to do something different. Most people think of leather as a very limited source, so I decided to work with the skin, tame it, and become one.”

She returns excitedly to introduce the LAURENCE BASSE PARIS fashion label, a brand dedicated to detail and structure. Basse plans to officially reintroduce her brand at New York Fashion Week in February 2024. “I am so ready and excited – LET’S BURN THE CITY!!! It’s going to be fire…” said Basse.

Basse’s NYFW show will be produced by her dear friend Mykel C. Smith of Mykel C. Smith Creative. Mykel C. Smith has been in the creative business for 20+ years as an event producer, celebrity stylist, casting director, event planner, and creative director. Highlights of the MCSC roster include Coke, L’Oreal, The Marley Brand, ELLE India, ELLE Spain, Top Owens Collection, Tracy Reese, Lenny Kravitz, Steven Tyler, Tike Sumpter, KeKe Wyatt, Skip Marley, Elvis Nolasco & various bold-faced publications. Mykel has produced many shows throughout his 30-year career but considers this show the highlight of his career because of the bond between the designer and himself.

Ask the 13-year-old kid from Astoria, Queens what he could foretell of his impending greatness and his answer may surprise you. Blaze Nyc never imagined himself having a career as a DJ, albeit a successful one at that, but he was inevitably lured to the turntables by his adoration for music and the thrill that pulsated through his body as he rocked the crowd. It all began with at the age of 13 when a lifelong friend formally introduced him to the artform by showing him his personal turntable set, after he fell in love with DJ’ing at 13 years old.

As time progressed and Blaze Nyc continued to hone his skills, it became evident to the masses that this NY City based disk jockey was creating his own path amongst giants in the industry, all while attending Berkley College and earning a degree in Business Administration One such giant was Macy’s, where Blaze Nyc became the department store’s resident DJ at their largest and busiest location in the nation in Herald Square. For 18 years Blaze Nyc was the resident mix master, responsible for engaging with customers and uplifting spirits to result in a direct impact on sales of over 30%. During his tenure, Blaze Nyc also guest-DJ’d with New York’s top radio stations including WPLJ’s 95.5, KYU’s 103.5, Power 105.1, and z100. As his star continued to rise Blaze cemented himself as a special event DJ that provided the soundtrack for various events for some of the pinnacle artists of our time including Russell Simmons, J Lo, Rhianna, Tommy Hilfiger, Brittany Spears, Beyonce, Jessica Simpson, Kevin Hart and Fergie at parties and events in locations far and wide including France, Australia, Dominican Republic, Colombia as well nationwide. As expected, Blaze began to draw the attention of some of today’s leading media outlets such as BET, Cosmopolitan, Vogue, Maxim, Latina and Seventeen where he mastered the ones and twos at their specialty events; events that included Fashion Night Out and Macy’s Fourth Of July Spectacular Show and event of which he is still at the helm.

In 2010 Blaze succumbed to a temporary setback when he was diagnosed with colon cancer at the age of 30. A fighter ever since his days in the Queens borough, Blaze knew that he would overcome his diagnosis; and overcame he did. Blaze Nyc came back on the scene with a renewed sense of focus and determination that spearheaded his new outlook that brought him to the forefront of several major NY hotspots including Catch Nyc and The Park. He also possessed a new and innovative business savvy to match that allowed him to create a new career path within event production for the same high-end clients that he once brought to their feet with his musical prowess. The media has taken notice to this metamorphosis with features in the Village Voice, Getty Images, You’re Cute and News Day. Today, Blaze Nyc can also add fashion trendsetter to his long list of accomplishments with the release of his new “dad hat” line, Blaze NYC, named after his late brother of which his name is in honor.
